Lady Provost of Aberdeen “a day in her life” 24th August 2005 Aberdeen's newest Rotary and only breakfast club - Aberdeen Bon Accord welcomes Lady Provost Helen Reynolds on Wednesday 24th August. Lady Provost will talk to the members on “a day in her life” which as one half of the busiest couple in the City should prove to be a fascinating insight into her role and the many hundreds of engagements carried out every year. During the morning the club will also present to Lady Provost a cheque for £750 destined for another Aberdeen - affected by the Tsunami earlier in the year. This was raised by a table collection on 14th May this year at the club Charter Dinner, attended by both the Lord and Lady Provost in the Town and County Hall. Two other good causes will also receive cheques for £1000 each from Lady Provost on behalf of the club. In this, the Centenary year of Rotary the club’s first major project decided to build on the rotary wheel and hosted a Bikathon on 29th May which followed a scenic route in and around the city. Around 60 cyclists took part on the day benefiting both the Anthony Nolan Trust and local charity the Aberdeen Safer Community Trust.
Club President Lindsay Fettes said “we are delighted to welcome Lady Provost to our breakfast amid what we know is a really busy schedule - her being with us I believe is a mark of what the Club has achieved in an exciting first year.”
LUCKY “FERGIES CAT” SET TO CREATE EBAY INTEREST The Rotary Club of Aberdeen Bon Accord is set to raise funds for worthy charitable causes by placing on Ebay a small feline statue decorated in an Aberdeen Football strip and signed by Aberdeen and Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson who has given his official support. The Cat in question is number one hundred of the Catwalk Kelly’s cat series launched to raise money for the Aberdeen branches of Leukaemia Research and UNICEF and was painted by local artist Lois Carson. The Catwalk project involves 100 replicas of the Kelly's Cat statues, which adorn the parapet of Union Bridge, being transformed into unique works of art. A number of these have already been seen across the City in various designs including one by local artist Eric Auld. The Rotary Club anticipate a high level of bidding interest and believe that Football Clubs around the UK and the globe could see the unusual cat as a lucky talisman for the football season ahead – perhaps helping to win a league or cup. … The subject of Superstition and Cats tend to go hand in hand. Football has also had its fair share of stories about lucky boots or dressing room pegs touched before a big game. Fergies Cat is set to follow and become a new legend!!! A spokesperson from Aberdeen Football Club has said “obviously we are all aware of what Sir Alex did for this club and we will be keeping a close eye on the bidding for this particular Cat”. Bon Accord Rotary Club President Lindsey Fettes said “As a new and contemporary club and having agreed to support this imaginative and worthwhile UNICEF fund raising exercise we decided to build on the project. With the assistance of Sir Alex, who we understand is himself an ambassador of UNICEF, we aim to raise further funding by widening the appeal of the Cat beyond the City in a way which epitomises the fellowship of Bon Accord and the City of Aberdeen. We are just amazed at the interest so far in Fergies Cat and are extremely hopeful that some big name clubs will enter the bidding – I am sure there will be much interest in the fortunes of which ever club or individual eventually owns this lucky cat – with it going on the internet who knows what interest this will create across the globe….”. Fergies Cat will be placed on Ebay at the end of this month under the |
